Strategic Planning

In my thirty years of nonprofit work, I've seen great strategic plans and I've seen some really bad strategic plans.


A great strategic plan is one that works for your organization with workable goals that everyone agrees on.


The process should not be boring and tedious or as a board member once said, "strategic planning is death by SWOT."  


My process is evidence-based and I try to make it engaging and uncomplicated.  You'll walk away with: 

  • clarity, consensus and alignment across your Board and staff leadership team
  • goals and action steps
  • an editable plan document


I know what it's like to walk away with a plan that ends up on shelf because it's not "doable."  I ensure that everyone who will be involved in implementing the plan has a voice in creating it. I'll help you bring together the people who need to be involved in the process. And, I'll help you establish processes for reporting and accountability.


Your work is important and the world needs you!  Your strategic plan should support that.

My Process

Step One: Pre-Planning

I work with the CEO, Board President and/or other decision makers to:


  • Determine the desired outcomes and create action steps for the process
  • Create tasks and a timeline for an effective and efficient process
  • Perform an organizational analysis and evaluation 
  • Ensure the vision and mission statements are current
  • Prepare for a successful planning retreat 

Step Two: Planning Retreat

During a dynamic two-day retreat, we will work together to foster collaborative thinking to create alignment on your goals. Each day is crafted and facilitated to ensure optimal productivity and results.


I employ an evidence-based method and facilitate interactive and focused sessions to:


  • Create the organization’s vision for the next three years
  • Identify and address obstacles that could affect goals, strategies, and outcomes
  • Develop strategies to overcome these obstacles and achieve the vision
  • Set measurable goals
  • Establish timelines
  • Produce a comprehensive action plan for the first year
  • Confirm reporting and accountability processes 

Step Three: Post-Retreat

Within one week of the retreat, I will:

  • Send you an editable Strategic Plan document 
  • Provide you with samples of documents you may need such as bylaws, policies, board governance guides, etc.


Within 30 days of the retreat:

  • We’ll have a phone call or zoom to answer any questions you might have.
  • I will suggest ways that I can support your work going forward.
